The Rector shall be appointed through election from amongst the candidates with at least the academic degree of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). i.e. doctor (doktor), who have not reached the age of 70 years on the date of the election, employed at the University in the primary workplace in the position of full professor (profesor zwyczajny) or an associate professor (profesor nadzwyczajny).

For the duration of his/her function, the Rector shall appoint between two and five prorectors. Candidates for prorectors may include independent academic staff members – who have not yet reached the age of 67 years – employed at the University of Warsaw as their primary workplace. A candidate for the position of prorector for student affairs must obtain consent of the majority of doctoral and undergraduate students’ representatives from the Electoral College.

The dean shall be appointed through election from amongst the candidates with the academic degree of doctor (doktor), employed at the University in the primary workplace in the position of full professor (profesor zwyczajny) or an associate professor (profesor nadzwyczajny).

For a term of office, one to three deputy deans are elected, including the deputy dean for student affairs, from amongst the candidates employed in the faculty in the primary workplace and holding at least the academic degree of doctor (doktor).

The director of the University Library in Warsaw shall be appointed by the Rector after consulting the Senate and the Library Council. Candidates shall be selected through competition.

The head of a basic non-faculty organisational unit is appointed by the Rector through competition from amongst independent academic staff members in accordance with the Regulations for the Competition for the position of a Head of the Basic Organisational Unit, which is appended to Order No. 8 of the Rector of the University of Warsaw dated 6 February 2013 on introducing the Regulations for the Competition for the position of a Head of the Basic Organisational Unit referred to in § 18 Section 2 of the Statutes of the University of Warsaw.

The head of the inter-faculty organisational unit shall be appointed by the Rector after consulting relevant deans. The deputies of the head shall be appointed by the Rector, at the request of the head of the unit. In the event of appointing the head of an inter-faculty organisational unit established for joint performance of research by at least two faculties or for the performance of tasks of a science centre, the procedure for his/her appointment shall be determined by the regulations of that unit.

The chancellor whose application has been selected through a competition, shall be employed by the Rector after consulting the Senate. The procedure, conditions of the competition and the composition of the competition committee shall be determined by the Rector.

The deputies of the chancellor, where there shall be no more than 4 of them (including the bursar), shall be employed by the Rector, at the chancellor’s request or on his/her own initiative.

Heads of the organisational units of the central administration and the administration of the University’s organisational units shall be employed following a competition procedure. The conditions and procedure for a competition shall be determined by the Rector.

The procedure for appointing institute directors, heads of departments and chairs as well as heads of other units shall be specified by the Statutes of the University of Warsaw as well as the regulations of the particular organisational units.
